Soft Cell is a synthpop duo formed in London in 1978 by vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball. Emerging during the new wave era of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Soft Cell quickly rose to prominence with their provocative lyrics, catchy melodies, and pioneering use of electronic instrumentation.

Best known for their smash hit “Tainted Love,” a cover of Gloria Jones’ soul classic, Soft Cell achieved international success and became synonymous with the burgeoning synthpop movement. Their debut album, “Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret,” featuring singles like “Bedsitter” and “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye,” remains a seminal work of the genre.

Combining elements of punk, glam, and electronic music, Soft Cell’s music captured the spirit of the times, reflecting the decadence and disillusionment of 1980s Britain. Despite disbanding in the mid-1980s, the duo’s influence endures, with their innovative approach to pop music continuing to inspire artists across genres.
